Cultural Collision

I found this video almost a year ago when a friend sent it to me in an email. I think he sent it to me as a joke, but it has been one of my favorite videos ever since.

The video consists of legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma and famous dancer Lil Buck collaborating in LA to produce a song and dance routine that, frankly, is like nothing you have ever seen. It is immediately fascinating to see a young, modern dancer move to a classical composition. It is interesting because of the unexpected nature of it, as two very different world collide into something that is unique and beautiful.

In terms of the storytelling aspect of it, I believe that the story is conveyed much like any dance routine, in that the movement of the dancer and the sound of the music together covey the mood of what is happening within the composition; so while we may not be able to derive specific details of the story being told, the audience is able to interpret the movement and current feelings being felt within the story. In a way, it is like many stories are being told all at once, as the audience is allowed to project its own experiences upon the musical piece, and so are able to interpret it in many different ways.

This video is a wonderful example of digital media storytelling due to its cultural collision of vastly different arts that tells two stories at once: first the emotions that are conveyed through the performance piece itself, and second the emotions that are garnered from the knowledge that these two worlds may never have come together to create it without the use of digital media.

  1. This is great! I like what you said about these two worlds having the possibility to come together thanks to digital media. Likewise, I would have never had the opportunity to view this collision without camera phones and the internet.

This also calls to remembrance that these two worlds aren't as far apart as many of us think. I'm a huge fan of the Step Up movies, which isn't usually an admission I publish online, but they, and this, remind us that many hip-hop or break dancers have classical training as well, and they have developed the ability to interpret music and demonstrate it visually.

  2. This is beautiful! Two totally different worlds colliding to create something completely unique and amazing! I feel like this is not only a story meant to attract strange looks, but it really is expressing two masters works of art in ways that couldn't be expressed otherwise.

It shows respect not only for what they do but it tells a story of their lives in a way. Imagine how long it took the both of them to get to this point in both dancing and playing the cello. This tells a story longer then just a 4 minute video.

  3. This was amazing. I loved how it combined the two types of art that you typically would not see together. the genres of hip hop and classical are normally considered opposites in the world of art, but that is was makes this video so amazing. The fact that they were able to combine opposites to create a masterpiece

I totally agree with what you said about dance routines telling a story. I love to dance, and have learned that each dance move carries an emotion. So, with a dance routine we can see the big picture after seeing the different moves and emotions make.

  4. I did not expect this type of performance at all--it was absolutely incredible! With the internet, and different media's ability to be viewed, I think that people have learned to separate things that seem so different because they do not fall under similar 'categories' on websites. However, I think that this video was a really neat way to show that one can appreciate something that has long, traditional roots (the lovely cello music) as well as appreciate newer arts (modern dance). They are able to, and do, compliment each other.
