As members of the only true church of God we have the unique responsibility to represent the people of God. We don’t necessarily need to make Church movies, but our person should be the image of a man or women who has Christ-like love and forgiveness, and holiness. This is the reason why our art cannot glorify sinful acts. Of Course adultery, murder and other sins can be, and perhaps should be, addressed in our movies; however, there is an appropriate way to depict them and an inappropriate way. I suppose this can be challenging but over all I see being a latter-day saint an overwhelming opportunity to inspire the world for good.
I also think that as a latter-day saint artiest we need to be careful when depicting ourselves. I never really like the single ward movies, and the more I think about them the more I really don’t like what they did to the image of the people who should represent Zion, the people to prepare the world for the second coming of Christ. I do really like all the films made by Go Films, not because they never mention the Church in their films, although that is kind of cool, but the fact that they are so much more reverent and holy about depicting members. Also, what Go Films does is they realize that there are funny goofy members of the Church, and there is nothing wrong with being funny and goofy, but Go Films depicts members of the Church in their greatest moments, like Coach Gelwix and Nathan Greer.
One of the greatest blessings of knowledge that we have is that all people on earth are God’s Children, and God loves them all as a Perfect Heavenly Father. These people, even though they are not members of the Church, are inspired by the Spirit of the Almighty God. We can find compelling stories of light in every corner of the world. We can find stories that up life us and bring us emotions. I have always been strongly affected by movies and I remember just recently getting emotional during the movie War of The Worlds. The scene when Tom Cruise’s Character, Ray Ferrier, is trying to comfort his daughter but does not know the right lullaby, he sings “Little Deuce Coupe” by The Beach Boys instead. You can tell this character loves his daughter and just wants her to be happy even in a hopeless world. For me the message of love, particularly in families, is the greatest message anyone can share.
